Democratic strategist James Carville on Friday criticized President Trump following his primetime speech this week, in which the president claimed that the U.S. election system needed urgent attention for vulnerabilities.

Carville joined Republicans in opposing the decision of several major broadcasters not to take the president’s remarks live on air. NBC News, ABC News and CNN all opted to carry the address on streaming platforms or play clips on air paired with expert commentary.

“I think it’s newsworthy when you watch the president of the United States sit there and tell multiple lies in a speech that makes no sense, is completely disjointed and I think people need to see that,” Carville told NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo.

During his speech on Thursday evening, Trump repeated his unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” from him due to widespread voter fraud and interference from China.

Democrats were quick to slam the president’s remarks and warned that the Trump administration was setting the stage to cast doubt on the results of the midterm elections.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the vice chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said he was “embarrassed” by the president’s claims of election fraud.

“As an American, I’m embarrassed,” Warner told MS NOW’s Jen Psaki. “I’m embarrassed that the president of the United States tried to speak to the whole nation with a whole series of falsehoods, accusations, I believe aimed at trying to undermine Americans’ confidence in our system.”

The White House released a trove of documents in conjunction with the address that purported to support the president’s claims. However, independent experts said these files contained previously-known details about election vulnerabilities.

Republican election official Gabe Sterling, the former chief officer of the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office, told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on Friday evening that “the evidence just isn’t there.”

“This has been the most examined, poked and prodded election in the history of mankind,” he said.
