Democrats have a slight edge over Republicans on their economic messaging for the first time in nearly a decade, according to a new survey.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll, published this week, found that 37 percent of voters say they prefer Democrats’ approach to handling the economy. Another 36 percent said they prefer Republicans and 27 percent said they are unsure.
The shift, the first since 2017, has likely been marked by President Trump’s declining approval and polling showing voters lack confidence in the GOP’s approach to monetary policy.
The latest survey shows just 35 percent of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing as president, just 3 percentage points higher than his lowest rating this term. It also marks a 2-point decrease from a similar poll taken in July.
Gas price fluctuation tied to the Iran war, rising inflation and global market instability has impacted voters’ outlook on the second Trump administration.
A separate poll from CNN recently found that 73 percent of U.S. adults say they believe Trump is not prioritizing the top issues facing the country as affordability concerns rise.
In the Reuters/Ipsos survey, 42 percent of registered voters say they would vote for a Democrat in November while 37 percent say they would vote Republican. Redrawn congressional maps in several states favor Republicans while early markups show 36 House races and 8 Senate seats are viewed as competitive races, according to the researchers.
The president has been on the frontline campaigning on the ground and via telerallies in an effort to keep a GOP majority in both chambers, all while casting doubt on low poll numbers.

“Don’t believe the Radical Left’s Fake Poll numbers. They are Crooked and Corrupt, just like the Country Destroying Dumocrats are Crooked and Corrupt. VOTE REPUBLICAN FOR GREATNESS IN AMERICA!” he added.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted from July 29 to Aug. 3 and collected responses from 4,505 U.S. adults. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.
