Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) removed a post on social media in which she criticized the woman who accused Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner (D) of rape.
The post came hours after Jenny Racicot, 41, told Politico that Platner sexually assaulted her five years ago — an allegation that Platner has denied.
In a story published Monday afternoon, Racicot accused Platner of drunkenly entering her home uninvited in 2021 and forcing himself on her despite her repeated refusals. She said the two met on a dating app called Bumble in 2019 and had been in an on-and-off relationship since.
Platner said his campaign would “reflect on the best path forward,” following the story’s publication.
Greene had quote-tweeted a post from Polymarket showing gamblers wagering on whether Platner would drop out of the race in light of the latest scandal.
“If you are raped or sexually assaulted, report it immediately. Don’t wait years later until the man runs for office to go to news outlets to tell your story,” Greene wrote hours after the report was published. “And if you had consensual sex with him years ago, don’t turn it into rape for politics with conflicting stories.”
She deleted the comment shortly after posting it.
Racicot told Politico that she did not go to the police after the alleged assault because she feared retaliation from Platner. She also said she did not come forward sooner because she was supportive of Platner’s political views and wanted a Democrat to win against incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) in November.
Politico said it spoke with a former boyfriend in whom Racicot confided to corroborate the claims, and reviewed emails between Racicot and her therapist, along with messages she sent warning an acquaintance about Platner prior to him launching his Senate campaign.
The allegation is the latest scandal hitting the populist oyster farmer’s campaign, prompting calls from leading Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), for Platner to drop out of the race.
Maine’s Democratic Party released a statement Monday urging Platner to “withdraw as the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate.”
“Over the past several weeks, multiple women have made serious, credible allegations against Graham Platner,” the statement reads. “We respect the women who made the hard decision to come forward.”
Other national Democrats quickly moved to cut ties with Platner.
Ken Martin, who chairs the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and has previously defended Platner in prior scandals, said Monday it was “time for him to end his campaign.” The DNC had also fundraised alongside Platner.
His campaign faced scrutiny and a swirl of negative headlines, including resurfaced Reddit posts with graphic language, a controversial tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol and, more recently, a sexting scandal revealing that his wife, Amy Gertner, had found sexually explicit texts Platner sent to other women during their marriage.
