Democratic state Sen. Cindy Holscher is projected to win the Democratic primary to replace Gov. Laura Kelly (D), according to preliminary results from Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).

Holscher had a narrow field of Democrats to outpace, facing off against state Sen. Ethan Corson and Overland Park, Kan., Mayor Curt Skoog. Corson was backed by Kelly as well as former Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D).

It’s an open race to become the Sunflower State’s governor, but the Cook Political Report says the race leans Republican.

Cook Political Report also noted that Kansas Republicans had a steep hill to climb in the years following former Gov. Sam Brownback’s (R) tenure. He slashed income taxes in 2012, pushing Kansas into a fiscal tailspin, with the ensuing bipartisan response leading to Kelly’s 2018 victory in the red state.

Holscher currently serves as the state Senate minority whip, representing Johnson County outside of Kansas City. She’s previously served the state House.
