House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) told reporters on Sunday that Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Ken Martin “has my full support” after multiple news outlets detailed an increasingly stressed national party chairman struggling with morale.
“The chairman has my full support,” the top House Democrat said while campaigning in Pennsylvania, according to NOTUS. “We look forward to our continued partnership.”
The New York Times reported on Sunday that Martin’s tenure as DNC chair had grown increasingly turbulent amid angst over fear that he might lose his job.
The Times reported that Martin threw a phone toward an aide earlier this month in frustration, prompting an HR complaint. Sources told the Times that Martin later met with HR.
The newspaper also noted that the national party had asked vendors not to send over invoices for services until after the November election amid anxiety over the DNC’s finances.
NOTUS reported that the DNC put up its building as collateral last year to receive a substantial credit line. A DNC official told the news outlet that the move isn’t new, saying in a statement that “loan documents were publicly released in November, and the DNC’s building was also used as collateral in our prior lines of credit in 2019, 2018, 2014, and many other years.”
Sources also told the Times that Martin’s inner circle had declined to a smaller number of confidantes and that he joked about the stability of his job.
Martin took over the DNC in February 2025 when the national party was contending with financial stressors after it agreed to help cover former Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign debt.
He also received backlash toward the end of last year when he reversed an earlier position that he would release an autopsy on the 2024 election
“Here’s our North Star: does this help us win?” Martin said in a statement in mid-December. “If the answer is no, it’s a distraction from the core mission.”
Martin said at the time that the committee already completed its review of the 2024 presidential election and that the party was “already putting our learnings into motion.”
The DNC reversed that position again, finally releasing the analysis in May, though it did little to quell his critics.
Martin noted at the time that he did not endorse the report’s findings, saying in a statement that “it does not meet my standards, and it won’t meet your standards. I don’t endorse what’s in this report, or what’s left out of it. I could not in good faith put the DNC’s stamp of approval on it. But transparency is paramount.”
Though Jeffries’s recent comments suggest that top Democratic leadership still supports Martin’s chairmanship, some members of the party have called on the DNC chair to step down.
“Ken Martin must resign,” Rep. Sam Liccardo (D-N.Y.), said in a post on X, responding to NOTUS’s recent reporting of Martin and the DNC. “As Democrats, we have become too captured by failing strategies. We must fail forward, and pivot. The urgency of this moment will not reward—and our children will not forgive—torpidity.”
