Far-right influencer Laura Loomer explained her changing views toward Russia’s war in Ukraine in an interview with The Associated Press while in a bunker below her hotel in Kyiv.
Loomer, a close ally of President Trump, told the AP that she believes her reversal on the war has already changed the minds of some MAGA voters loyal to the president.
“Oh, 100 percent,” she told the outlet. “I’ve received messages all day from different people and media and politics and people just who follow me online who said, ‘Wow, I didn’t realize how much we’ve been lied to.’ ‘Wow you really opened my eyes.'”
She slammed how influential podcasters have been able to spread misinformation about the conflict, so much so that these podcasters “have been able to warp people’s minds to the point where people aren’t even capable of analyzing a subject with common sense anymore.”
Loomer called this “a major national security threat,” adding that she thinks the “information war” could be “more destructive than any kinetic war that our country may ever face.” She urged the Trump administration to take Russian propaganda seriously, having previously told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a publicized interview for her Rumble show “Loomer Unleashed” that she admitted to falling for propaganda out of Moscow.
“I’ve come to realize I was bamboozled by Russian propaganda and I came to believe a lot of untrue things about Ukraine,” she said to Zelensky. “I used to think that this was a country full of Nazis.”
Loomer gave similar remarks in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, where she admitted her views on the war had changed. She said she “made a mistake” and called Zelensky a “wartime leader,” while noting that supporting Ukraine is “America first.”
“I think they support what I support,” she said about MAGA voters backing the Ukrainian war effort.
Ukraine’s deputy prime minister and minister of culture, Tetyana Berezhna, told the AP that she hoped what Loomer saw while in Kyiv “will help her to spread the truth when she is back at the U.S.”
“I do really hope and I believe that her visit will have a huge impact on relations with the U.S. administration,” Berezhna added.
Loomer told the AP that she traveled to Ukraine on her own and that the Ukrainian government did not financially support her trip.
“If it’s fake, why did I risk my life?” she said. “I’m in a bomb shelter right now. I barely slept this week.”
Loomer has long peddled various conspiracy theories, including the claim that the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks were an “inside job” and claimed mass school shootings were “false flag” operations masterminded by Democrats.
Loomer apologized to Zelensky for her past remarks about Ukraine two days after Russia launched a deadly attack on Kyiv that killed six people. She wrote on social media last week that she felt “like such an a‑‑hole for minimizing the struggle of Ukrainians for the last 5 years. I often said I don’t care. Looking back, that wasn’t very nice of me to say.”
Trump appeared to support Loomer’s movements in Ukraine. He shared a clip of her interview with Zelensky on Truth Social and captioned it with: “Very good!!!”
