New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) is expected to give a speech marking America’s 250th birthday on Friday flanked by recently naturalized citizens, according to a new report.
Sources say Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and later gained citizenship in the U.S., will speak hours before President Trump addresses the nation in South Dakota at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, according to CBS.
The planned remarks come just three days after the Supreme Court issued a ruling that upheld birthright citizenship, sparking criticism from conservative justices and lawmakers alike.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has seen his political prominence rise after successfully backing three congressional candidates in House races last week, with two of them ousting incumbent lawmakers.
The success of the Mamdani-backed candidates in New York and Melat Kiros unseating longtime incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado earlier this week has led many to speculate about the rise of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party.
The New York City mayor is an active supporter of Palestine and remains heavily critical of Israel, an issue that continues to divide Democrats.
He slammed elected officials who’ve received funding from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) while also criticizing establishment politicians for not doing more to end U.S. military strikes in Iran.
He described the conflict as an “illegal war of aggression.”
Despite his vocalness, Mamdani has maintained a “productive” relationship with Trump and met with him twice inside the Oval Office.
