Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) is “fomenting hate” after the mayor accused the prime minister of being a war criminal.

“Look at what he’s doing. He’s fomenting hate. He’s supposed to be the mayor of all New Yorkers, Jews, Christians, Muslims, everyone,” Netanyahu told Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures” while discussing Mamdani.

“But he’s trying to turn one group against the other, and he’s foisting hate and fear. I speak to Jewish Americans in New York, and they’re afraid right now,” he added.

Last week, Mamdani backed off a vow to arrest Netanyahu if he goes to New York City in a few months for the yearly United Nations General Assembly.

“It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant. The federal government, however, does,” Mamdani said in a June video posted on the social platform X.

“And I call on them to join the ICC [International Criminal Court] and execute this warrant,” the mayor added.

“As human beings, we have spent generations building a shared understanding that there are crimes so grave they offend all of humanity. Anyone, with their eyes, with their heart, with their conscience, should recognize the devastation he has wrought and understand that he belongs before a court of law,” Mamdani added.

In November 2024, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu, alleging that he had undertaken war crimes and crimes against humanity due to military action taken in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Israel and the U.S. are not subject to the ICC’s rulings, with both countries never having ratified the Rome Statute treaty that created the court.

The democratic socialist mayor incorporated Palestinian advocacy into his campaign for the Big Apple’s top job last year.

The Hill has reached out to Mamdani’s press office for comment.
