President Trump on Tuesday celebrated plans for Toyota to move manufacturing operations of its Tacoma truck from Mexico to Texas, a move aligned with his administration’s efforts to grow American manufacturing jobs.

“A really big deal. Tariffs at work!” the president wrote in a Truth Social post, referencing trade policies that imposed taxes on imports from Canada and Mexico.

Toyota announced on Monday that it plans to double the size of its manufacturing campus in San Antonio by 2030, a $3.6 billion expansion that the Japanese auto company said could generate an estimated 2,000 additional jobs in the state.

This new expansion is tied to the company’s announcement last year that it would commit $10 billion to growing its U.S. auto manufacturing operations over the next five years.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) called the move a “Texas-sized investment” in a statement accompanying the company’s announcement.

“Supported by the Texas Enterprise Fund and JETI program, this expansion will deliver economic opportunities to generations of San Antonio families and further cement Texas as the premier destination for world-class advanced manufacturing,” Abbott said.

The expansion will add a second vehicle assembly line to produce Toyota’s Tacoma truck — one of the company’s top-sold models, according to a 2025 annual report. The company will transfer Tacoma production from its plant in Baja California, Mexico, to Toyota Texas over a four-year period.

“We are so proud of Team Texas and what they have accomplished over the past two decades,” Frank Voss, the president of Toyota Texas, said in a Monday statement. “The 2,000 acres of South Texas ranchland our plant stands on today was purposefully selected for its ability to scale with vehicle demand, and today marks the first step toward realizing that potential.”

The plant, which has been in operation since 2006, is located in south San Antonio in Bexar County. It currently employs more than 3,700 people, according to data on the Toyota website.
