President Trump sounded the alarm over communism during a campaign-style stop in Michigan on Monday ahead of the state’s Democratic Senate primary next week.
Trump did not name Senate candidates Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) and Abdul El-Sayed during his rally in Milford, Mich., but he sought to paint Democrats broadly as “communists.”
The president referred to communism as “the greatest threat to our country in history,” including World War I, World War II and the attack on Pearl Harbor.
“We can’t let them get their claws into this incredible, they call it an experiment,” Trump said, adding that the U.S. is having “the single greatest year we’ve ever had as a country.”
“We’re not going to let these people destroy it,” he continued.
At the same rally, Trump labeled a heckler as “a communist.”
“We’re running against communists now,” the president said. “You see what they want to do? They want to take your houses. They want to do things that nobody’s ever thought of before. They want to take your money. They want to raise your tax up to 80 percent.”
Trump’s comments come ahead of Michigan’s primaries, which are slated for Aug. 4. The Democratic Senate primary is widely considered one of the most competitive intraparty contests in the country.
El-Sayed hails from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and has been attacked by Stevens and the party’s establishment as being too far to the left. Stevens is considered the establishment candidate and has the backing of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
The Decision Desk HQ polling average shows El-Sayed leading Stevens 47 percent to 41 percent.
