President Trump on Wednesday issued a forceful response to Iran’s surprise attack overnight targeting U.S. forces in Jordan, vowing to “beat the f—ing s— out of them.”

Trump made the comment in an interview with Fox News, adding that the U.S. will be hitting Iran “hard.”

“They’re going to get a beating,” the president added, according to the network.

U.S. Central Command (Centcom) revealed on Tuesday evening that Iran launched a series of ballistic missiles at a U.S. base in Jordan, in what the military agency referred to as a “surprise attack.” Centcom said all of the missiles were shot down.

The attack was the first publicly disclosed one since Trump announced a halt on strikes against Iran over the weekend. The escalation also came hours after the president met with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

Trump ordered a pause on strikes on Iran on Friday in an effort to make room for diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

The president told reporters on Monday that Iran had requested a meeting with the U.S.

Earlier this month, Trump was considering carrying out major combat operations against Iran, which was backed by defense hawks in Congress. However, Trump ended up not going ahead with an attack due to warnings from advisers of dwindling stockpiles and expanding the conflict further into the region.
