Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) on Tuesday declined to endorse Troy Jackson, the state’s Democratic nominee for Senate, months out from the general election.
“We haven’t spoken, but clearly Susan Collins is vulnerable, and she should be — she should be defeated,” Mills said in an interview with WMTW News 8.
Jackson earned the party nomination last week after embattled candidate Graham Platner stepped aside in response to allegations of sexual assault.
Several candidates recently dropped out of the race to woo 601 Democratic delegates to clinch the party nomination.
However, Jackson, the former president of Maine’s Senate, gained 566 votes and recently earned an endorsement from former Vice President Kamala Harris, who said she could relate to his short timeline to campaign.
While Mills didn’t move to directly endorse him, she did note that Collins “faces a steep challenge” toward reelection this year, and “rightfully so.” She accused the incumbent Republican of allowing President Trump to abuse his authority.
Mills dropped out of the Senate race in April and declined to endorse Platner at the time.
