Former President Obama is set to headline a redistricting fundraiser for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) at the end of the month as the party looks to strike back on Republican efforts to redraw maps nationwide.
The event is on Aug. 31 and will include a dinner and discussion, per the invitation obtained by Punchbowl News.
It comes as Democrats increase their push to gain the majority in the House and Senate amid reports of heightened debt.
The party has $15 million on hand but $18 million in debt, according to Axios. Leaders in the Democratic National Committee were recently asked to sign nondisclosure agreements to prevent leaks about financial woes, per the outlet.
Some are hoping that the fundraiser helmed by Obama will help reel in monetary support for plans to combat GOP mid-decade redistricting in Texas, Ohio, North Carolina and Florida.
President Trump has encouraged Republicans to lead similar efforts in other places, while the Democratic Party’s attempts at redistricting have either failed or been stalled.
Voters approved new maps in Virginia, but the redrawn lines were struck down by a court.
Lawmakers in Maryland held off from approving new districts earlier this year, despite a push from Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D).
The NDRC, helmed by former Attorney General Eric Holder, is now looking to rework campaign strategy, fundraising, ballot initiatives and lawsuits in the state redistricting fight.
