Ohio GOP Sen. Jon Husted on Thursday said that Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) is “unfit for public office” if the allegations of domestic violence leveled by his ex-wife are true.
Miller, whose ex-wife has accused him of throwing hot water at her, pointing a gun at her head and breaking their daughter’s collarbone, is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee over allegations of domestic abuse and illegal drug use. He has denied the accusations and has vowed to remain in the race despite mounting scrutiny.
Asked by NewsNation whether he thinks Miller is unfit for office, Husted said, “Well, let’s say this and be clear about this: any domestic abuse is intolerable.”
“Any member of Congress who’s involved in domestic abuse should resign. That’s why I am glad that the House opened up an ethics investigation. They will get to the bottom of whether those allegations are true. And if they’re true, then he should step down,” Husted, who is in a tight reelection race of his own, said.
Pressed on whether Miller should leave his race before the investigation is complete, Husted said, “You know, we’re gonna talk more about what potentially can happen there. I know that time frame is short, but if he’s if guilty of domestic violence, he’s unfit for public office.”
Miller and his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, divorced in 2025, and the two have been locked in a bitter custody battle over their daughter.
Thursday marked Husted’s first comments about the case, which has consumed Ohio politics.
Emily Moreno is the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), who has called for Miller to resign and said Tuesday that his daughter lives “in constant fear of this man. Not like something that’s existential, but deeply in her heart, she fears what this guy is capable of.”
He added that when his granddaughter was staying with him, she would cry at night because she did not have her little blue bunny with her and that Miller had refused to hand it over, a charge Miller rejected. Mother Jones reported Thursday that Miller has repeatedly withheld his daughter’s blue bunny and the back-and-forth over the stuffed animal has become a central focus of the ongoing saga.
Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) wrote on the social platform X in response to the blue bunny controversy: “What kind of person would treat their daughter this way? This guy is clearly a degenerate sociopath.”
“Max should step aside and seek help. Staying in this race makes it far more likely we lose this seat and hand Democrats a majority to impeach President Trump,” Sheehy wrote.
Miller told CNN Tuesday that he is “never going to give up” in his reelection battle.
“At the end of the day, you know, I let the truth speak for itself, and the truth is right there. And I will never, ever, ever let my baby girl see her dad walk away as a quitter. I will continue to finish this, and if I have to run all the way to the end and I’m not successful, Jake, then that’s a decision that I decide to make, and I can hold my head way up high, knowing that I fought for the truth,” Miller said.
