President Trump on Monday called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to keep the upper chamber in session until it passes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act or eliminates the filibuster.

“John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town’ until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of, including a full and deep throated SAVE AMERICA ACT, the Budget, and the ever looming Debt Ceiling disaster, 1929!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

Trump went on to argue that Democrats would terminate the filibuster on their first day if they were to win back the Senate majority this fall.

The president’s demands follow calls from other Senate Republicans, including Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), to cancel the August recess to pass the legislation.

“@LeaderJohnThune, I hereby object to any effort to put the Senate into recess in August—at least until such time as the Senate has passed the SAVE America Act—and hereby request a roll call vote. Do not assume you have my consent. You do not,” Lee wrote in a post on the social platform X.

Tensions have been escalating between Trump and Thune over the SAVE America Act.

Trump has repeatedly called on Senate Republicans to pass the legislation, despite Thune saying the party does not have the votes to pass the bill. Trump has also urged Senate Republicans to eliminate the parliamentary procedure known as the filibuster, which would allow the party to pass the bill by a simple majority vote. However, Thune and Republican leadership are not in favor of scrapping the filibuster.

Thune is in the process of pushing through a third reconciliation bill, which was passed by the House and includes provisions from the SAVE America Act.

Thune said last week that the budget resolution, which would serve as the blueprint for a third reconciliation bill, does not have the 50 votes needed to advance in the Senate.

“As I’ve said before, you got to get to 50, and I can’t count to 50 right now on a budget resolution,” Thune said when asked about whether the Senate would move the House-passed framework for reconciliation.
